This homemade tzatziki sauce is fresh, creamy, and bursting with flavor. It’s perfect to enjoy on gyros, Mediterranean-style bowls, and as a dip for veggies and pita chips and bread. Not only is it better than store-bought tzatziki, but it’s so simple to whip together!
Jump to RecipeIngredients You’ll Need to Make Tzatziki Sauce
There is nothing better than fresh tzatziki sauce. It’s packed with delicious, healthy, and fresh ingredients. This is my tried and true recipe, but I’ll show you ways to customize it and make it your own as well.
- Greek Yogurt and Olive Oil- I use full-fat Greek yogurt because you can’t beat the creaminess but you may substitute for low or non-fat. You can even use half yogurt, half sour cream if you want to make it creamier.
- Fresh Mint and Dill – Okay, I don’t always use fresh dill, but you really don’t need to. Dried dill still gives this sauce a great flavor. But never skip out on the fresh mint. It ties this recipe together.
- Lemon juice and Zest – 1 large lemon is usually enough for this recipe but if you like it extra lemony, you can add extra. And don’t forget the zest!
- Garlic – To make this sauce a little spicier, add extra garlic and crushed red pepper or a dash of cayenne.
- Cucumber – One of the most important ingredients in tzatziki! Make sure to peel before grating.
How to Make Homemade Tzatziki Sauce
- Start by getting the ingredients together. This recipe needs lemon, cucumber, olive oil, greek yogurt, fresh mint, fresh or dried dill, garlic, and salt.
- Next, prep the cucumber. Peel then grate using a box grater. There’s going to be a lot of moisture so be sure to wrap the cucumber in a cheese cloth and squeeze out the water.
- Combine all of the ingredients in a medium bowl and stir until smooth.
- Taste and if needed, add more garlic, lemon, salt, etc.
- Refrigerate for at least an hour before serving. The flavors will open up more, and you want to serve it cold.
Tools You’ll Need
The most important tool you’ll want to have is a Box Grater. This will be very handy to grate the cucumber. This one also has a zester on one side, which you’ll also need to zest the lemon. A Lemon Juicer will also be necessary for this recipe. These juicers are so nice because they get every last drop and ensure you won’t be left with seeds in your tzatziki.
